Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) are essentially closed-end real estate funds. They invest in commercial, office and/or residential properties. REITs typically generate high income (10%-to-15%) and some provide even higher returns. Because of their high yields, REITs are currently very popular. Lately, some REITs have been yielding over 20%. Here are some examples of REITs: CAP, Cominar, HR, RESREIT Retirement Residence, and Rio Can. These REITs trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Your stock broker should be able to provide more information. Money Digest publishes articles on REITs, income and royalty trusts on a regular basis.

The research reported in this issue is generally focused in two areas. First, several authors look at the role of publicly traded real estate securities in portfolio management for investors in direct real estate equities. Simon Stevenson, in The Long Term Advantages to Incorporating Indirect Securities in Direct Real Estate Portfolios examines the impact of REIT investment in both an optimal and a more probable world. His findings are interesting because they show that REITs bring improved performance to portfolios that look more like the NCREIF portfolio while their marginal value to an optimized direct portfolio may not be evident. The other interesting finding is a significant performance improvement brought by the addition of multi-national property securities to a domestic direct portfolio. Should investors approach an asset class in the context of their portfolio goals? Timothy Craft explores that issue in The Role of Private and Public Real Estate in Pension Plan Portfolio Allocation Choices. He examines the portfolio allocation choice in the context of a plans pension liabilities. One interesting result is a resolution of the dichotomy between standard optimization models that often argue for high real estate allocations and the typically lower allocations found in existing plan portfolios. Michael Seiler, James Webb and Neil Myer test the expectation that private real estate portfolios can be adjusted with real estate securities in Can Private Real Estate Portfolios Be Rebalanced/Diversified Using Equity REIT Shares? They conclude that REITs are a worthwhile addition to mixedasset portfolios but that they do not bring the ability to effectively rebalance or create marketneutral portfolios.

Turkeys message may be mixed, but her democratically elected president and prime minister have made the clear connection between Turkeys own European Union prospects and a Cyprus settlement which would first reduce and then remove the Turkish troops now stationed in Cyprus. At last we can see Prime Minister Erdogan and President Gul, and in Cyprus the leaders of the two main communities, Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat, and the leader of the main opposition party, Nicos Anastassiades, uniting to support a settlement. There may well be those in both Cypriot communities whose vested interests lie in the status quo. However the overwhelming majority of Cypriots, including Turkish Cypriots, will benefit from a break with the past, especially from the substantial economic growth that will inevitably follow. If the pro-solution faction succeeds, we in the UK who care about Cyprus will be able to say Cyprus without the next word always being problem. Citizens of Cyprus in both communities can enjoy their future together in a Cyprus with one sovereignty, one citizenship and political equality, in the new bi-zonal, bicommunal United Federal Republic of Cyprus. Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR? STEP contributor Alice Twemlow just comes right out with it and poses this interesting question in her newly released book-an ambitious task, to say the least. Beginning with an outright list of the roles of graphic design, Twemlow puts to rest any fears that this profession is a useless one: “Its for selling things and ideas to make money or to further political agendas. But then you realize its also for critiquing such behaviors. Its for making things clear-saving lives even-but its also for enriching our everyday lives through the addition of layers of complexity, nuance, and sublety. Its for helping people find their way and to comprehend data, but its also for helping them to get lost in new ideas, fantastical narratives or landscapes, and to question and contest what information is presented. Graphic design is enmeshed within all aspects of social life. From the signs that tell car drivers to stop at intersections and the nutrition label that clearly shows a consumer how much cholesterol is contained in a piece of food to the title sequence that graphically encapsulates the atmosphere and themes of a movie to speed the viewers suspension of belief-it is the sheer diversity and pervasiveness of graphic designs products and outcomes-as well as their inherent contradictions-that resists their being corralled into a list for analysis.”
do it yourself Exciting news! Your boss wants some marketing materials for your company, and youve been given the responsibility of hiring and working with a graphic designer to develop them. Its a high-visibility assignment-to date, the companys materials consist solely of letterhead and business cards-and the task will be a welcome change to your usual duties. Working with a designer can be intimidating, but if youre careful in your selection of, and forthcoming in your discussions with, a graphic designer, youll have a much better chance at getting materials you really like. Furthermore, you might find a designer for a long-term business relationship.
THE EDUCATION OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER by Steven Heller (ed.) “Gone are the days when someone (like me, for instance) stumbled into the field, learned totally by doing, and got a great job almost by accident,” explains Heller. “. at times graphic design education still seems like a crapshoot.” Without a solid education in graphic design and support from recognized designers, todays rising stars would lack the opportunities necessary to kick-start their careers. As Jeffrey Keedy notes, the main lesson is that we continue to involve ourselves in the discussion and evolution of the state of design and design education: “Graphic design is bigger than any one of us, so lets start acting like we believe it.”

Junk shop chic is the creed, and After Noah the name that husband and wife team Matthew Crawford and Zoe Candlin chose for their shop - they liked its suggestion that they would sell absolutely anything post- diluvian. Upper Street, Islington - the Kings Road of north London - was where they decided to found their business. Success came swiftly, and earlier this year they opened a second shop on the real Kings Road in Chelsea. Down a steep staircase you can find anything from a Twenties coat button to a kitsch decorated rubber washing-up glove as used today. After Noah brings a whole new meaning to eclecticism. But, of course, it would not have been enough simply to house a lot of junk, no matter how desirable. After Noahs popularity is the result of a meeting of two canny business minds, both with strong artistic bents and very different talents. “When we opened After Noah we wanted to combine our talents,” explains Matthew. “We both have a strong idea of our individual styles and managed to merge them well.” Matthews background as a cabinet maker and furniture restorer ensures that whatever comes in for sale can be lovingly restored and beeswaxed back to health. His apprenticeship to his grandfather more than a decade ago means that he now boasts a workshop of 12 years standing, trusted by the likes of English Heritage, Kew Gardens and even one or two embassies. Zoe is an artist and mosaicist with an unerring eye for consumer delights and a nice line in mosaic table-tops, which are now one of the shops most popular lines. The balance of old and new pieces is about 60-40, but youd never know it. A handmade steel bed may resemble the one your granny owned, but its available from the workshop, starting at pounds 595. Conical chocolate cups at about pounds 4 apiece look as if they are the last batch of a Thirties consignment. But dont worry - there will be a huge delivery of more next week. If there is one thing After Noah has achieved it is this balance of old incidentals and the ultra new, such as Tumbler cups -vessels with a rocking bottom -and the vinyl vase - a strip of plastic sleevelets which you fill with water for single stems and attach to your window. A price range stretching from pocket money to Fort Knox ensures that After Noah is relied on heavily by gift hunters: bored with the mass of glossy shops all offering similar goods found in every city centre, they troop in here knowing that they are always likely to find something a little different. The philosophy of After Noah is simple: keep it basic, keep it functional. There is almost a puritanical streak running through the choice of merchandise in the shop, made doubtful only by the chaos: you may bang your knee on a stool and collide with a spray of dried flowers, both at the same moment. After Noah is like an attic. Its your attic, my attic - different contents, but the same mania. So perhaps there is a little bit of all of us that responds to what one of Matthews assistants calls “disorganised comfort”. “People dont live in museums,” pronounces Matthew. “They acquire things over a period of time. Some are good quality, some are not, but overall there is a look, a cohesiveness.” Is it perhaps a look which is simply a home from home, or do they, Jekyll- and-Hyde-style, live in high Napoleonic splendour? “I think the shop is probably nicer to live in,” Matthew confesses with a little laugh. Recently an advertising campaign has raised the profile of After Noah, which has prompted the couple to open a second outlet on the Kings Road in Chelsea - some would say, the Upper Street of the South. The day after the worst blackout in U.S. history, Verizon Wireless came out boasting. ATT Wireless and Sprint both reported widespread service outages thanks to a combination of power failures to back-up systems and a huge spike in phone usage. Verizon Wireless, however, reported that its network is fully operational, although customers in the New York City and other impacted areas are asked to be patient if their calls do not go through on the first attempt due to very heavy calling.
Zultys Technologies today announced the BTC
phone, a powerful wireless conference phone that is compatible with its
range of SIP IP phones as well as mobile phones. The BTC (Bluetooth
Conference Phone) provides unparalleled speech quality and removes clutter
from the conference room table.
The BTC phone is aesthetically designed to enhance any conference room. Its
batteries power the unit for about a week, obviating the need for power
cables and phone lines to be dragged across the conference room table. The
portability and use of open standards permit the phone to be moved from
room to room or to a remote facility — even your car. The phone has four
microphones and a powerful DSP (Digital Signal Processor) ensuring clarity
of both the listeners as well as those at the other end of the call. The
phones speaker output is best in its class and the acoustic echo
cancellation permits a natural conversation.
“We have been delighted with the quality of Zultys products and service
since our installation several months ago,” said Dennis Cabuco, IT manager
at the San Francisco Bay Guardian newspaper, in San Francisco, California.
“There has not been a viable solution for adding conference phones to an IP
system before Zultys introduced this phone. We love the fact that Zultys
products are so flexible, easy to use, and have such great speech quality.”

MERGER MEASURE The Topeka Capital-Journal plans on Sunday to publish a copy of the unification plan approved Tuesday by the Consolidation Commission of Topeka and Shawnee County.
Plan bans tax increases in the first five years of a unified government The Consolidation Commission of Topeka and Shawnee County decided Thursday to prohibit any merged city/county government from raising property tax mill levies for the first five years of consolidation. Commissioners expressed a renewed sense of optimism for the fate of a plan to consolidate Topeka and Shawnee County governments after voting 5-0 to approve the tax hike ban, which could be changed only through a public referendum.
THE SERIES SUNDAY: Consolidation vote could hinge on a proposed five-year ban on mill levy increases. TODAY: Rural residents remain unconvinced that consolidation wont kill townships. TUESDAY: Questions remain over annexation in the county and consolidation of services.

A pleasant environment is vital in increased employee production. The focus of an interior designer is to create such an atmosphere. Through research, the designer interviews workplace managers and employees, then suggests specifications that can meet employee needs. “Its creating an environment that supports the way people work,” said Laura Brett Tribble, owner of Tribble Design Associates. “Youve got to create an environment that is pleasing.” “I view what I do as gifting people with an environment that supports the way they work or live,” Tribble explained. “Its a gift. Thats why I enjoy my job and love what I do, because I create an environment that makes them feel better, makes them work better.”
For this reason I recommend drawing a plan to scale on paper. Choose plants that like the soil and growing conditions you have to offer - it means less work in the long run - and dont plant too close. Check a plants ultimate height and spread on the plant label and add a few extra inches on either side. Finally, observe the movement of sun and shade through the garden. Use a camera to capture effects - youre looking for those magical spots that can be put in the spotlight with creative planting.
breast augmentation palo alto

* In 2004, an estimated105,500 breast reductions were performed, a 25 percent increase over 2000. The procedure is often performed to relieve significant health and emotional problems resulting from overly large and/or heavy breasts, including neck and back pain, shoulder pain, chafing or rash, significant limitation of activities, unhappiness with appearance, chronic headaches and nerve damage. Psychological issues include depression and stigmatization, poor self-esteem and anxiety, and problems finding clothing that fits. * Whether you choose to have your breasts increased, lifted or reduced, its important that you understand not only the benefits of the procedures, but also the risks, costs (health insurance rarely pays unless there is some medically necessary reason for the surgery), and various surgical options available, and that you choose the right physician. Your surgeon should be board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, have privileges at a local hospital, and be trained in the technique youve chosen. * Most women opting for breast surgery are young and healthy; however, a full medical evaluation is still required. For instance, if you smoke or are overweight, your health care professional may counsel you to quit smoking and/or lose weight, both of which reduce the risk of complications from surgery.

Providing that the economy stays strong, with inflation and unemployment low, the prospects for Generation Y to remain aggressive apparel shoppers remain excellent. Of an estimated $140 billion spent by kids in the 12 to 19 age group last year, more than one-third, about $46.7 billion, was spent on apparel, exclusive of another $14 billion spent on health and beauty care, according to research by Teen Research Unlimited and Channel One. The pattern of teen sales is ubiquitous within all tiers of retailing. Juniors and young mens departments are among the strongest at department stores and specialty chains. Retailers, such as Abercrombie Fitch, The Buckle, Wet Seal, Pacific Sunwear and Urban Outfitters, are registering some of the strongest overall and comp store sales increases of any apparel outlets. Will it be long before its the mass markets turn?

Heather Barbour supplies gifts for giving. Official gift giving is what corporations and public sector organizations do for a variety of purposes, including acknowledging a state visit, thanking a speaker, honouring a service or achievement, celebrating retirements and anniversaries and marking an institutional milestone. A gift can speak volumes about the organization that gives it; hence it is not something to be taken lightly. Barbours gifts are ambassadors for Canadian art and craftsmanship. Tributes represents artists and artisans across Canada: wood carvers, glass blowers, painters, Innu carvers and Haida designers whose works are manufactured in pewter. David and Lee Bernett from Ste. Agathe des Montes, Quebec, carve in marble and soapstone; Ottawas Richard Bond developed a unique technique for sand blasting an image onto stained glass. Hoselton Sculptures of Coburn, Ontario, creates polished aluminum sculptures from recycled aluminum that run, according to Barbour, from “the affordable to the unique.” Its because she can supply gifts from the affordable to the unique that organizations keep coming to Heather Barbour.
Business Editors Prime parking spots, years-of-service pins, and newsletter profiles are still business mainstays, but gift certificates have become the most accepted and appreciated way to motivate and reward employees. Corporations have turned to gift certificates not only for their flexibility and ease, but also to please employees and clients with diverse interests. Unlike fleeting recognition or a generic award, gift certificates are both useful and, when redeemed for merchandise, unique to each recipient.

Hypnosis Hawaii
August 29th, 2008
Definition
Hypnosis is a state described as sleeplike. It is usually induced by another individual for the purpose of tapping into the unconscious mind. As a result of the hypnosis, the subject may experience forgotten or suppressed memories. Hypnosis has also been described as a way to use a persons inherent healing capabilities that usually remain inaccessible to him and outside of his control.
Purpose
Hypnosis can be helpful in relaxation and pain reduction by decreasing muscle tension. Hypnosis can also reduce pain by helping the subject visualize and create an alternate reality perceived as being safe and comfortable. Many doctors now use hypnosis to overcome the pain of headaches, backaches, childbirth, cancer, severe burns, and pain and fear resulting from dental procedures. In some cases, surgeons use hypnosis in the operating room, not only to reduce the amount of anesthesia needed by the patient, but also to lessen anxiety and postoperative bleeding and swelling. In other instances, hypnosis has been found useful in reducing the severity of asthma.
Psychologists use hypnosis in treating patients to overcome negative habits, anxiety, fear and depression. Also, it is commonly used to help patients recall past events, which is useful in psychotherapy. Family physicians have recently begun to use hypnosis to treat psychosomatic illness (physical illnesses or complaints that are largely caused by psychological factors). Professionals in the field of psychotherapy have also found positive results in helping patients control appetite and reduce the levels of drugs necessary in the treatment chronic illness.
Precautions
Because hypnosis can sometimes completely remove or distract people from feeling pain, it is important that a doctor or other appropriate medical specialist assess the underlying medical or psychological condition prior to hypnosis. Another important precaution when dealing with hypnosis is that, despite potential medical benefits of hypnosis, misinterpretation is possible because of the questionable reliability of the memories recalled during hypnosis. Because there is no medical degree required for the practice of hypnotherapy, persons wishing to undergo hypnosis should be sure that the therapist is well trained. It may be helpful to find a therapist who is a licensed professional in a field where hypnotherapy is part of normal practice, such as social workers and psychologists. It is important to check credentials and background when choosing a hypnotherapist.
Hypnosis is not to be considered a form of psychotherapy, nor a treatment capable of solving problems immediately or on its own. Problems and habits take time to get implanted in ones life, and it takes considerable amount of time–and often therapy–to remove them.
Description
A hypnotic state results from gradually entering a state of consciousness unlike that of awareness or sleep. During this time, the attention of subjects is withdrawn from their surroundings. Most individuals can easily be hypnotized, but the depth and extent of the hypnotic state varies.
Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis. In hypnotherapy, hypnosis is used by psychotherapists to modify a patients behavior. According to the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists, there is a 75-90% chance of effectively changing behavior with hypnotherapy. Once the patient has seen a hypnotherapist, self-hypnosis can be learned, and is sometimes recommended as part of the treatment plan. Self-hypnosis involves a patient using relaxation techniques and specific signals to clear his mind of extraneous thoughts and sensations.
Preparation
Hypnotherapy requires only that the patient desire to change a certain type of behavior. The hypnotherapist usually prepares for the sessions by asking the subject to stare at an object, suggesting, in a soothing voice, that the eyelids are becoming heavy, that the subject relax, and that he is becoming hypnotized. Then, the hypnotherapist conveys to the subject that it will be effortless to follow the hypnotherapists suggestions
Aftercare
Coming out of the hypnotic state is as simple as entering it. Waking from the hypnotic state slowly is preferable for optimal results. After hypnosis, subjects report changes in bodily sensations and describe an awareness of having gone into an altered state of mind.
Risks
Because hypnosis can sometimes completely remove or distract people from feeling pain, it is important that a doctor, or other appropriate medical specialist, assess the underlying medical or psychological condition. This assessment is important because, when using hypnosis to reduce pain or other physical symptoms, the pain may be alerting the patient to a problem that needs some other form of medical or psychological treatment. As an example, a brain tumor might be causing chronic headaches, and require immediate treatment.
Normal results
Family doctors have begun using hypnosis to treat psychosomatic illness, control appetite, and reduce the need for medication. Because of the utility of using hypnosis to reduce the sensation of pain, it can make it possible for physicians to lower dosages of pain medication in cases of chronic illness. Because hypnosis is actually an intense state of concentration, physicians have now accepted the fact that patients can regulate their own heart rate, circulation, temperature, muscle tension, and other body functions, if necessary.
Abnormal results
Hypnotherapy requires that the patient desire to change a certain type of behavior. Success is greater the more committed the subject is to change. If the patient is reluctant, hypnotherapy may be unsuccessful.
Key Terms
- Anesthesia
- The absence of normal sensation, especially sensitivity to pain as induced by an anesthetic substance, or by hypnosis. May be induced for medical or surgical purposes topically, locally, regionally, or generally.
- Hypnotherapist
- A professional who uses hypnosis as an adjunct to other techniques in psychotherapy
Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)
If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional-such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker-who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:

TransportationHistorically, societies have always located near water, due partly to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to going over land. Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world. The complex network of connections between coastal ports, inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of material economic wealth worldwide.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.
Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.

At prenatal classes, expert nurses inform you of what to expect. Each stage of labour, along with the emotions involved, is outlined. The labour at the beginning of life. Sure as taxes, the pain will come. Life is proceeding as it should. There is a beginning and a progression. Just around the stage called transition is the hardest part, the pressure, the wish to stop or the choice to push forward. They may tell you not to push. You may hold back, against gravity, and against Mother Nature. Resisting. We have an opportunity to start in pre-dialysis clinics. We teach. We support. We try to maximize understanding and optimize good health. End stage renal failure will come. Planning for this phase can be as natural as planning any life event. Then there is the labour of beginning treatment. A patient and family undergo major shifts in lifestyle. Crises come and, hopefully, dissipate.

August 28th, 2008
Quad Biking

Made for any kind of terrain, TH!NK bikes are as comfortable on smoothly paved roads as rugged gravel trails. The electric bikes allow riders to use their own leg power, but have easy pedal-to-motor drive switching.
Bikes are magical, says Lee Ravenscroft amid piles of tires, handlebars, gear boxes, and buckets of chains in the unheated warehouse of Working Bikes Cooperative. The all-volunteer group takes donated and discarded bikes, repairs them, and then distributes them locally and internationally. The cooperative has working relationships with nongovernmental organizations in Latin America and Africa. In April, the three-year-old group plans to ship several hundred bikes to Angola. And it recently managed to send a volunteer to Ghana in addition to bicycles. In the Third World, bikes help farmers deliver produce and enable children to go to better schools, Ravenscroft says. Nick Colombo, a college student and volunteer, says that Working Bikes Cooperative is a good introduction to the subversive yet innocuous rebel subculture of people who like bikes. We take garbage and make it usable, he says.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.–(BW HealthWire)–Sept. 9, 1997–Health Net, one of Californias largest health maintenance organizations (HMOs), will offer direct access to acupuncture treatment as the next step in a planned expansion of its complementary and alternative medicine coverage, subject to California State Department of Corporations (DOC) approval. Certain complementary and alternative treatments have proven to be very effective for diagnoses such as chronic, intractable pain or musculoskeletal conditions, said Arthur M. Southam, M.D., Health Net president and chief executive officer. Our goal is to help our members be healthy and well, so we are enthusiastic about offering complementary medicine options that are safe and effective. Health Net has been a national leader in providing complementary and alternative medicine. It was one of the first HMOs to offer direct access chiropractic care beginning in 1990. Health Net is currently the second largest health plan nationwide providing a direct access chiropractic rider. Health Net provides the chiropractic rider to more than 600,000 members.
Acupuncture prior to the administration of surgical anesthesia can reduce the intensity and length of postoperative nausea and vomiting by as much as half. Acupuncture alleviates nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or pregnancy. It incontrovertibly works against the pain following dental surgery.A million Americans undergo acupuncture each year for an array of reasons, ranging from relief of pain and stress to immunity and fertility enhancement, smoking cessation and drug detoxification. The panel judged such treatments as often worth trying, especially in conditions where biomedical interventions do not solve the problem - for example, chronic pain. The panel based its recommendation on the observation that patients have been reporting benefits from acupuncture for millennia. Moreover, although most uses of acupuncture still lack firm support from randomized controlled clinical trials, other types of evidence point to possible efficacy. These include animal and human studies showing biochemical and blood circulatory responses to needling. Finally, even if a treatment does not work - either because the patient is a nonresponder or the technique is truly ineffective - the risk of adverse effects is small.
The World Health Organization (WHO), whose authority concerning health-related matters internationally cannot be challenged, has compiled a list of symptoms, syndromes, disease processes, pathologies, traumas and conditions that have definitely been proven as effectively treated by acupuncture. The WHO has also compiled a list of diseases, symptoms and conditions for which acupuncture has shown definite therapeutic effects, but more proof is needed to establish it as a mainstream form of treatment. Should a curious patient, insurance company or colleague require proof of acupunctures effectiveness, the following list is something you will want to keep on file. Its use is inevitable and will be invaluable. In an official report, Acupuncture: Review and Analysis of Reports on Controlled Clinical Trials, the WHO lists the following symptoms, diseases and conditions that have been shown through controlled trials to be treated effectively by acupuncture:

The things some people will do for a white Christmas.
Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

Oral Chelation
August 21st, 2008
Chelating therapies are not new, and acceptance varies from country to country. In my humble opinion, there are reasons for this discrepancy in acceptance: 1. If you speak Latin to the Chinese, expect miscommunication. 2. To receive medical acceptance, you must prove the therapys effectiveness.
The government is beginning a $30 million study to determine once and for all whether chelation therapy offers any benefit for sufferers of heart disease. Chelation therapy is the main treatment for lead poisoning. A manmade amino acid called EDTA is seeped into patients blood, through a vein, to sop up the toxic metal so it can be excreted in urine. Some doctors have argued for decades that chelation therapy also could clear blocked heart arteries, perhaps by sopping up inflammation-causing molecules or calcium in buildups that clog blood vessels. Federal regulators have cracked down on proponents for falsely promoting chelation as a proven heart remedy — several years ago the Federal Trade Commission forced a doctors group to quit such advertising — and warned that the therapy can cause kidney damage or other side effects, especially if not administered by a properly trained professional.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

(This article originally ran in Lawyers Weekly USA, Boston, MA, another Dolan Media publication.) When parents with children divorce, their relationship is rarely over. The plan - which was distributed in September to 1,600 members - is intended to be a road map for navigating potentially bumpy child- rearing issues. It covers everything from where children will live and who theyll spend holidays with, to what after-school activities they can attend and what their summer schedules will be. The plan also asks parents to agree on their childrens religious upbringing and to confer with each other about non-emergency medical, dental and psychological treatments.
STEPHEN WARD A beleaguered Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackay, spelled out concessions and reassurances to lawyers last night in an apparent attempt to secure their support for his Divorce Bill.
Lawyers who handle collaborative divorce cases are passionate about the method. They tout it as a kinder, gentler way to do divorce, a process that saves clients money and reduces the hostility between the soon- to-be exes. But some family law attorneys are, to put it mildly, unconvinced. They believe collaborative divorce is useful for the occasional couple but is, in general, a minefield of inflated hopes and potential ethical problems.
Annapolis Architects

We often describe TRADOC as the architect of the future. That description is more than casual in that an architect designs buildings and superintends their construction much the way that TRADOC envisions future warfare, explains the capabilities required for the future and monitors the development of materiel. The architects special relationship between the client (user) and the engineer (the builder) is analogous to TRADOCs role representing the soldier during the capabilities development process. An architect must have a vision for the final construction; TRADOC has to lead the Army in articulating a vision of future warfare. An architect must bridge the world of art and science; TRADOC has to understand warfare as both an art and a science. The architect protects the interest of the client in the construction process; TRADOC preserves the integrity of the required specifications as materiel systems are developed. While the architect must understand both form and function, TRADOC must not only describe required capabilities, but also how they go together by means of doctrine to create synergy in joint and Army operations. Finally, while the architect (TRADOC) has the big picture, engineers (Army Staff, Army Materiel Command, the acquisition community and others) develop the blueprints from architectural drawings (concepts for future land power) to ensure our nation always has an Army prepared for the call to duty.

Acupuncture is considered a form of treatment or therapy. However, acupuncture practitioners believe that acupuncture may be most successful when it is applied as an early intervention for symptoms or conditions. It may be that acupuncture can prevent some symptoms and conditions from becoming worse or chronic. To date, two studies have shown a positive effect in preventing breech births among pregnant women. More research is needed to define the preventive value of acupuncture.
In addition to its efficacy in relieving pain and other chronic conditions, acupuncture has gained in popularity because of several additional advantages:
It lacks the side effects associated with many medications and surgical treatments in Western medicine.
It is highly cost-effective; it may be used early in the course of a disease, potentially saving the patient the cost of hospitalizations, laboratory tests, and high-priced drugs.
It can easily be combined with other forms of therapy, including psychotherapy.
It is noninvasive.
It carries relatively few risks.
Electroacupuncture. In this form of acupuncture, the traditional acupuncture points are stimulated by an electronic device instead of a needle.
Japanese meridian acupuncture. Japanese acupuncture uses thinner, smaller needles, and focuses on the meridians rather than on specific points along their course.
Korean hand acupuncture. Traditional Korean medicine regards the hand as a map of the entire body, such that any part of the body can be treated by stimulating the corresponding point on the hand.
Western medical acupuncture. Western physicians trained in this style of acupuncture insert needles into so-called trigger points in sore muscles, as well as into the traditional points used in Chinese medicine.
Ear acupuncture. This technique regards the ear as having acupuncture points that correspond to other parts of the body. Ear acupuncture is often used to treat substance abuse and chronic pain syndromes.

Local lenders for Washington Mutual Inc. have landed at other companies after the struggling Seattle-based mortgage company said it was closing four offices in Central Pennsylvania. Nationwide, Washington Mutual is closing 100 mortgage offices and laying off 2,500 workers in 17 states. Eighteen were employed in Central Pennsylvania. The company also is shutting down 53 commercial bank branches, idling another 850 workers. None of those branches are in Pennsylvania. Coyne suspected layoffs were on the way, given turmoil in upper management and the slowdown in the mortgage market. Nonetheless, he was surprised by the speed. “They told us we were going to go dark on Monday (July 28),” Coyne said.

Economy powers ahead in 2006Q2 * While the continued buoyancy of domestic demand is not surprising, neither is evolution of inflation. July preliminary CPI figures show a rise of 4.0%, the same as the average rise in 2006Q2. With oil prices likely to remain at over $70pb over the short-term and domestic demand showing no significant signs of a imminent slowdown, competitiveness will continue to be eroded. * Continued growth could be threatened by any incipient collapse in property and asset prices, as well as by weakness in the labour market and the evolution of real wages. While high inflation means negative real interest rates, thus boosting corporate investment, at the same time a fall in real wages of 0.8% over the past year is forcing households to continue to take on debt in order to finance their purchases of goods. With no clear improvement in labour productivity, the current trends which exacerbate existing imbalances in the economy, will continue to put medium-term growth at risk.
Highlights and Key Issues * A third consecutive monthly rise in the number of unemployed in December- almost entirely in construction - bodes ill for GDP growth in the current year, which we forecast at a below consensus 2.5%. There are now 107,000 more unemployed workers than in December 2006. * The housing market crisis is weighing heavily on consumer confidence. Last year the market saw a sharp fall in the rate of house price inflation, which we forecast at 3.5% year-on-year in 2007Q4 compared to 9.1 % a year earlier. The danger is that in 2008 a weaker labour market, relatively high mortgage costs, and falling house prices may lead to a sharp rise in foreclosures.

Nashville, Tenn. - TNN canceling several series — The Nashville Network is canceling some country music-oriented programming, including the talk-variety format that has been its prime-time flagship for 16 years. Executives at the cable network Monday confirmed reports that “Prime Time Country with Gary Chapman” would stop production in September. Three entertainment magazine shows that focus on country singers also are being canceled: “Crook Chase,” “Crook Chase Tonight” and “This Week in Country Music.”
John Osbornes first play, Look Back in Anger, had its premiere in 1956 and he called it a formal, old-fashioned play. His second play, The Entertainer, was set during the Suez Crisis and opened in 1957. What was new about both was that the characters were real working-class people. No real parts had been written about working- class characters before - only “cheeky chappy” roles such as Doolittle in Pygmalion. When asked if I wanted to go to see The Entertainer I was uncertain. Why? I had worked backstage on a brilliant amateur production (by the Tavistock Rep) in 1969 and it had stayed in my mind, with few productions since to affect the fond memories. How wrong I was to hesitate. For me this production, under Sean Holmess direction, ticks all the boxes and putting it on 50 years after it was set is brilliant timing. So much of it resonates in 2007: a misguided war in the Middle East and young men dying needlessly; the obsession with skinny/size zero women; fading performers (or “personalities”) trying to reinvent themselves; feelings against politicians of either party; comments about the Poles and the Irish; and confusion over national identity.

Gary Morin envisages the day — in the not-too-distant future — when a scanner monitors his household refrigerator and prints out a shopping list. For a man whose business life revolves around printing, the concept is appealing. Morin is executive vice-president and chief financial officer of Lexmark, which with Hewlett-Packard is engaged in a two-horse race to rule the global printing industry. In this age of the Internet, the pace of growth shows no signs of abating.
After completing the acquisition of three commercial printing companies at the end of April, Teldon International became one of the largest printers in lower mainland British Columbia. This current success is ironic because when the company was founded in 1969, and for close to 20 years after, it didnt own a single press. In the 1980s, Teldons management began researching the printing industry. “We decided that a large part of our program was on printed paper, like calendars. We decided to manufacture it ourselves,” says Michael McAdam, general manager and COO of Teldon International. To begin its internal printing capabilities, the company purchased a sheetfed press in the early part of the decade, then a Miller 66 half web press in 1989. Even after this printing expansion, the company still did not consider itself a printer. The presses were only used to manufacture the printed promotional products in the Teldon line.”Weve always viewed our promotional product side as our primary business,” says McAdam.

Scotland spends more per capita on the NHS than England does, but by next year it will have Europes lowest life expectancy, says Fraser NelsonImagine a British National Health Service flowing with French or German levels of funding. This dream, we are promised, will soon be delivered in return for higher taxes. But for the impatient, there is a solution: visit Scotland.Gordon Browns motherland was strangely absent from the list of countries sized up by the Treasury when it examined health systems from around the world last year a study which predictably concluded that money, not organisation, was the problem. Yet only Scotland shows what happens when cash is stuffed into an unreformed state-run monopoly stamped with the DNA of the late 1940s. It is the only country in the free world to have tried what Brown is now aiming for.
A pretty poor World Cup, apart from one half against Australia, has left Scotlands reputation damaged but with new coach Matt Williams on board, there is at least a fresh feel around Murrayfield. Current form: Not great. A win over Italy before the World Cup was followed by defeats to Wales and Ireland. Then narrow wins over Japan and Fiji got Scotland through the group stage but there was a record defeat to France before the inevitable exit at the hands of Australia. Weaknesses: The centres are not the strongest and there is no proven scorer out wide, although Simon Danielli looked impressive in the RWC match against the US.

PHOENIX — Plenty of mystique surrounds the phrase “pitchers and catchers report.” But on a team like the Oakland Athletics, where there arent any superstars making grand entrances or players denying what Jose Canseco wrote about them in his book, the day is mostly about shoes. Showing off new shoes. Trying on new shoes. Complaining the wrong shoes arrived. So it went on an overcast Saturday morning with light rain for the As at their Papago Park facility, where just as many position players have already arrived as pitchers and catchers.
Six surface officers were selected as the first student Naval Aviators not long after Naval Aviation officially began in 1911. They trained at North Island, California and coming from the fleet, their uniform shoes were black, low-quarter, square-toed, rough surface leather shoes. These functioned well and looked OK on coal burning ships where black soot often descended on personnel and their shoes. At North Island the students found themselves in a new environment characterized by brown dust from the soft surface airfield, which settled unattractively on their black shoes. After considerable discussion they decided that brown high-top shoes with brown leggings would work better for them. The brown dust wouldnt look so bad on brown shoes and might be easier to clean. On a Saturday morning they located a cobbler shop on 32nd Street in San Diego and commissioned the manager to produce the shoes at a price they could live with.

TELEPHONE SKILLSTelephones are devices that allow the user to communicate messages across lines electronically. One can easily communicate with those both nearby and far away using the telephone by simply dialing a specially designated number. The word telephone comes from two Greek words meaning far and sound. It is difficult to estimate the total number of telephones in existence today. They are ubiquitous because of their extreme importance as a communications tool. Telephones come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, as well as with options that can be configured to accommodate almost any conceivable need.
TeleMatrixs new family of Cordless telephones will allow for up to three additional (four total) handsets to operate from a common base unit. TelephoneA working electrical voice-transmission system was first demonstrated by Johann Philipp Reis in 1863. His machine consisted of a vibrating membrane that opened or closed an electric circuit. While Reis only used his machine to demonstrate the nature of sound, other inventors tried to find more practical applications of this technology. They were found by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 when he was awarded a patent for the first operational telephone. This invention proved to revolutionize the way people communicate throughout the world.

Lawyers, it seems, have discovered public relations, and it delights them to no end. When they write a press release, they dont have to prove anything they say. When their press release lands on an editors desk, the editor sees a hot little local story. Railroads, as a rule, dont comment on cases under litigation, so the story goes totally unchallenged even if the editor takes the time to ask for comment. Even if the railroad did try to comment, how can you keep on top of situations over tens of thousands of miles and respond promptly enough to meet an editors deadline? Taint easy, and the lawyers know it. An old dodge among lawyers is to harp constantly about irrelevant points to make a witness look bad. For example, a friend witnessed a crime. On the witness stand, the defendants lawyer pelted her with questions about exactly how many feet she was away from the road, the sidewalk, the nearest stop light and on and on. When she didnt have the distance down to feet and inches, he bellowed that she didnt even know where she was that day, so why should a jury believe her? By focusing on totally irrelevant or only slightly relevant points, the lawyer distracts from the real issues. And if lawyers can get away with that in a courtroom, just think how far theyre willing to stretch in a press release.
Lawyers need courage and compassion as personal virtues. But lawyers may need these virtues in ways that they had not imagined when they first entered the Bar. Statistics about lawyers are alarming. I have read that 40-50 percent of disciplinary cases involve lawyers who are suffering from an impairment, usually an addiction to alcohol or drugs. I have read that lawyers are twice as likely as other Americans to have an addiction, depression, suicidal tendencies, or stress anxiety. To be more concrete, I have read that 10 percent of Americans suffer from an addictive, emotional, or mental impairment. By contrast, these same sources estimate that 20-25 percent of lawyers suffer from an impairment. If this is true, it means that in Oklahoma at least 2,000 lawyers are practicing who are impaired. Two thousand lawyers who likely do not realize that they need to be courageous and compassionate toward themselves. Lawyers need courage to say, “I am an alcoholic,” or “I am addicted to drugs.” Lawyers need courage to say, “I am emotionally exhausted by my divorce,” or “I am overwhelmed with grief at the death of my child,” or “I am debilitated by too much work.” Once lawyers are courageous with themselves, they can be compassionate to themselves by seeking assistance to address these burdens. But not all lawyers individually will either have the insight or the courage to face the fact that they are suffering from an impairment. In those instances, their fellow lawyers must have the courage to speak the truth to the impaired lawyer. Fellow lawyers must not turn away from the impaired lawyer in the ill-advised hope that all will be OK somehow. Fellow lawyers show compassion for an impaired lawyer not by ignoring the lawyers impairment but by helping that lawyer to get needed assistance. Moreover, by acting with courage to assist an impaired lawyer, fellow lawyers can often prevent serious harms from occurring either to the impaired lawyer or to the impaired lawyers clients. Once harm occurs to clients, fellow lawyers have the obligation to report the impaired lawyer to disciplinary authorities for misconduct. Where can a lawyer with an impairment, or fellow lawyers desiring to assist, go for help? Since 1985, the Oklahoma Bar Association has supported the Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers Committee. For 12 years, the volunteer members of this committee have provided confidential, immediate responses to those who call for help. Volunteer members arrange a meeting to discuss the situation and to offer suggestions for further treatment — be it counseling, admission to a treatment center, or joining a 12-step program. Volunteer members will serve as a sponsor to meet with the impaired lawyer as often as necessary to get the lawyer on the road to recovery. Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers has the goal of recovery, not discipline. Beginning in January, the Oklahoma Bar Association committed $18,000 to match $18,000 provided by the Oklahoma Attorneys Mutual Insurance Co. to hire a part-time director for the committee. As described by the Lawyers-Helping Lawyers Committee, the director will develop treatment plans, conduct counseling sessions, make lawyer evaluations and referrals, maintain a 24-hour hotline, coordinate the activities of the committee volunteers and develop educational programs for the Bar about impairment. In addition, the director will identify professionals from other disciplines who have the skills and the desire to work with lawyers suffering from an impairment. This year is the first year that Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers has had a staff member devoted to its tasks. While the arrangement at present is only for a one-year trial period, Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers is hopeful that the trial period will convincingly show the need for a full-time director on a permanent basis beginning in 1999. Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers has acted with courage and compassion to face an issue that has not received the attention that its seriousness deserves. Lawyers are suffering; clients are at risk; the profession bears the stigma of attorneys who commit misconduct while impaired. For ourselves, our clients, and the profession, we, the organized Bar, need to say, “We, my brother and sister lawyers, are human. We are impaired. Let us show courage and compassion for one another.” To reach the Lawyers-Helping-Lawyers Committee, call 1-800-364- 7886. Telephone ScramblerIn a phone scrambling system, information sent over a public switched telephone network, or PSTN, is scrambled. The authentication of the unscrambling device at the receiving end is checked, and when an incoming message is received, it remains inaccessible until a special code or identification number is entered. One consumer system, according to a report in the trade journal Security, uses voice coding technology as a further security measure. The principle of telephone scrambling is similar to that applied in making a Web site secure so that users can enter financial information without fear that this data will be intercepted. In both cases, sophisticated encryption makes it all but impossible for interlopers to obtain the desired information.

PLUS workshop examines hard market for legal liability, jump in law suits Lawyers malpractice insurance rates are on the rise, primarily due to a prolonged soft market that had to flatten out sooner or later, and partly due to a legal system that is growing more complex every day.
(This article was originally published in Lawyers USA, Boston, another Dolan Media publication). Its the 21st Century version of being discovered. In March 2004, a new blog was launched from the perspective of a fictional hiring partner at a large law firm in a major city. Biting, sarcastic and at times painfully insightful about the life of a corporate lawyer, The Anonymous Lawyer (anonymouslawyer.blogspot.com) was an instant hit with attorneys across the country.

TRANSPORTATIONTransportation systems move goods and people around the world. Physical distribution of goods is accomplished by various means: truck, railroad, airplane, ship or boat, and pipeline, or a combination of these methods. Surface and air transportation systems that are widely used to transport people include automobiles, bicycles, rail, air, ship or boat, bus, and rapid-transit systems.Railroads are a low-cost mode of transportation for large quantities of heavy and bulky items. Since rail lines are stationary, other forms of transportation move goods to
In the final quarter of 2007, passenger transport saw the largest increase in air transport and the largest decline in city bus transport. Within land passenger transport, the declining trend of bus transport continued. The annual decline in the number of passengers in intercity and city bus transport (-3.9% and -3.5%, respectively) was also similar to the average annual decrease in the last three years (5.9% and 3.3%, respectively). The volume of railway passenger transport in the final quarter of 2007 did not strengthen significantly year on year; the 2.4% growth recorded in 2007 was also only slightly above the three-year average (2.1%). Air transport and airport transport posted vigorous growth in the final quarter of last year (27.6% and 19.6% year on year, respectively). The increases in 2007 (13.7% and 13.3%, respectively) were also somewhat greater relative to the average annual rises in the last few years. In air transport, this also enabled an increase in aircraft fleet (lease of one and purchase of two new aircrafts) and in airport transport, the completion of the first phase of the new passenger terminal and arrival of two new airline companies, which started to fly regularly from Ljubljanas airport last year. Within freight transport, road transport has increased significantly, whereas maritime freight transport is still decreasing slightly, following the boom recorded in this branch two years before. In the final quarter last year, the volume of freight transport by rail decreased by 3.7% relative to the same quarter of 2006, whereas 2007 as a whole saw a solid 6.8% growth, which exceeded the average growth in the last three years (4.6%). Road freight transport strengthened by as much as 19.1% in the final quarter of 2007; the high 13.4% annual growth nevertheless fell short of the annual average of the last three years by almost 2.p.p. Against the background of favourable international trends, maritime freight transport increased by a respective 30.6% and 41.8% in 2004 and 2005, whereas it dropped by a respective 6.4% and 5.2% in 2006 and 2007. The fall in the volume of maritime transport in the final quarter last year (-8.7%) indicates that the slowdown continues. Harbour freight transport in the final quarter and in 2007 as a whole recorded only a slight increase, particularly compared to the high 22.5% growth in 2006 (average annual growth in the last three years totalled 9.5%). Road freight transport by domestic carriers recorded a much stronger increase than railway freight transport over the last few years, largely due to the increasing international transport (see graph). The volume of road freight transport (in tonne kilometres - tkm), which was almost as much as three times greater than railway transport in 2004, increased by 4,728 million tkm until 2007 (by 52.5%), whereas railway transport increased only by 454 million tkm (by 14.4%). In three years, road freight transport became almost four times greater than railway transport; the share of road transport within freight transport rose to 79.2%. Road transport growth strengthened particularly after Slovenias accession to the EU and mainly through increased international transport (see SEM 1/2008: 14). The largest increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage, by 2,161 million tkm (by 155.2%). International transport of goods loaded in Slovenia increased by 1,323 million tkm (by 49.4%) and international transport of goods unloaded in Slovenia by 937 million tkm (by 35.1%). National road transport in Slovenia increased by a mere 306 million tkm (by 13.5%).

Heres the seventh in our series of soft adventures for I998. The long, slow, sizzling drag of a tent zipper-a sound like a metallic snore-briefly interrupts the dawn stillness. One hiking boot follows another through a canvas flap to thud softly on wooden decking. With a stretch and a yawn, an early rising camper surveys the thick woodlands and sweeping mountain scenery of a day on safari. On safari in North Carolina, that is, thanks to an energetic and welltraveled dreamer named Bart Ely.

Two of Virginias neighboring states, Maryland and West Virginia–each a longtime haven for outdoorsmen–are taking very different approaches to youth hunting. If passed, this bill will have a devastating effect on recruiting young hunters and the future of wildlife conservation in Maryland, said Rob Sexton, USSA vice president for government affairs. The bill is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the future of hunting. Parents, not the government, are far more equipped to know when their sons and daughters are ready to hunt. House Bill 655 has been referred to the House Environmental Matters Committee in Maryland. The devastating effect Sexton mentions not only damages efforts to introduce youngsters to hunting, but it also will impact the states economy.

If vendors arent going to tell you what you want to know, who is? You are, but youll have to do a little digging. Dont accept proclamations at face value. Unearth some skeletons. And never lose sight of the way you want to serve your members, because thats why youre looking for a core processor in the first place.
